the verdict

The Verdict?

Anyone have a good experience installing and running VISTA? I'd love to hear some feedback before continuing and committing. I have a feeling there are those who have had a smooth experience, but in these newsgroups, one only usually hears about the problems. Thanks.

ok here, except no sound from Audigy 2 (64bits), no TBT-TV, and no Supraexpress modem drivers.
EVERYTHING ELSE is working, i supplied no extra drivers to Vista :-)

I have had no problems with a clean install. An upgrade took over 4 hours

If you continued with the Upgrade, is it functioning OK?

no major problems here, but I did do a clean install on a new hard drive. when opening various things in windows explorer (control panel, folders, etc.) the wdm sometimes crashes, causing the screen to go black for almost a second. other than that, it runs a little slower (noticably when playing dvd videos). have you checked the upgrade advisor? http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/upgradeadvisor/default.mspx

Took about 40 minutes to do a clean install on a dedicated "primary" DOS partition. The only problem I have is that I can't get my scanner to function.

I created a new Partion and started to install. The install itself took one hour, and 20 minutes or more until it was ready to work. I needed to update via the Windows Update the Soundcard drivers to work and I had some issues with the defauly Nvidia drivers, some flickering .. really wired one... and i downloaded and install the latest officials for vista and now all good.
I
am really amazed of vista... it is really good and cool, amazing... i read a lot of reviews about it, but being in it.. is completely different.. and i am using it only for some hours and still dont know all the features.
I got some issues trying to open Some files from My Document's @ XP's Drive from Vista, some to do with UAC and I am waiting to get help on it..
But I really recommend installing it.
Luis.

I can't boot from any disc I've burned (I've posted separately about it), but running it as an upgrade from a W2K drive went flawlessly. It does take a long time (mine took about an hour to copy files, then another half hour to expand - about 1:45 total), but I haven't found a problem yet. Admittedly, I've been playing more than testing, but it's worth the upgrade to me just for the visuals.
I am kind of surprised they didn't use a new startup sound, though. The old XP ditty that I've heard 10,000 times is tired. Maybe a new one for the actual release? (I know, petty)

Some problems with the installation, had to do clean eventualy. Amazed at how fast and slick it is. Yes there are some issues with drivers but everyone will catch up soon. Enjoy.

I'm enjoying it so far.
I did a clean install.
The negative: It took me a while to figure out how to move my new "User's" data to my D partition (where I always store data) and the default UAC warnings were VERY annoying until I finally figured out how to stop them (although the changes to the local policy didn't seem to stick after reboots or perhaps that is because I'd freeze and have to hard boot, I'm not sure yet).
I also have an unidentified device that I can't find drivers for since Vista can't even tell me what the device is. This REALLY surprises me because isn't Vista supposed to be more advanced than XP which COULD identify it? heh.
I'm
getting hangs and freezes. I suspect because of all the new graphics goings on. I have a decent card (nVidia Geforce 4 ti 4200) but obviously it's not a newer one.
The positive: I like the look of it (despite it being VERY Mac like (I'm still convinced that one day we'll only have one main operating system, heh)).
It seems more intuitive for the most part.
Umm, that's about it until I stop the hanging and freezing so can explore more. heh.

I too have a few issues with the "macness" of the new OS... BUT I have a feelin that MS has some stuff up there sleeve (at least i hope they wouldnt just cop off an OS thats about to be replaced with new and improved list of feature on Mac {Leopard}) Im thinking that MS' renewed interest in Community involvement and there seemingly much more open feedback processes along with COM of the .net Framework are gonna really appeal to a new crowd (open source and Mac Users alike) as well as raise the brows of some of us Windows veterans. (Double Cheers on That)
Like many have said though im happy with a well supported community involved OS , I dont necessarily need flashy window minimization and "Gadgets". But they sure do impress people :)

I've had good and bad (mum always said i was different!)
Installed on to a desktop machine at second time of trying, first time around got an error message, started again and deleted all logical disks and installed on the one physical disk, no partions, without any hassle. Had to then load in new video drivers and once the machine rebooted and re-started i have to admit i was blown away, it's a very nice look and feel operating system.
As for the bad experience.. well currently having problems trying to install it on a laptop, it just won't install, but maybe down to the disks im using, but won't know till i try a DVD+R.
Micrososft will charge £10.98 gbp for them to ship the original disk to you.
Cheers

Update folks since long time install,
Been bothering those that need to upgrade drivers and get themselves ready. NVidea have a Vista Beta Driver to try for all those intrested and you can sign up for Symantics beta testing. Have not heard back from others except "in development " so seems that all the money makers have been caught on hop by MS decision to release beta to the pleps.
I am running 2GB ram and NVidea GT 7600 256MB and so far the probs are few although WMP 11 beta does have some issues with certain types of video streaming, though this is true when run on XP as well.
Darkone I have always had a problem with the XP start up/close down sounds as it drives me crazy when I hear it. Fortunatly it is only on others machines that I hear it as I have stopped both a long time ago and it was one of the first things I did with Vista. Minor I know but these things can drive you crazy.
I do dislike the MAC type interface and and trying to get used to it (still trying to figure out how to do many things as still in XP mode). Have dropped many of the bells and whistles features as to much iceing
Overall the verdict is good. Vista is quicker and feels lighter than XP. Most important it has increased my download speed but waiting to see if this is because provider has not learned how to close gateway on Vista. So I guess I like it.
